FIRST THINGS FIRST! The best way of finding your way around Methil and the surrounding conurbation known as 'Levenmouth' is to purchase a copy of Ronald P A Smith's Leven/Buckhaven/Methil/Kennoway Street Plan, available from local bookshops, newsagents and petrol filling stations. This map was one of the first in the present series of nearly 100 maps, having been first produced in 1983 and now coloured and in its 15th edition. At the large scale of 6 inches to 1 mile (1:10,000), it is still the most detailed map of its kind available; the only one with comprehensive indexes and locations of places of interest; leisure facilities; schools; places of worship; health and welfare facilities; and other information including the local footpath network and locations of industrial estates, emergency services, etc.

As well as Methil, Leven, Buckhaven and Kennoway, the street map covers Methilhill and Windygates. To order by post direct from the publisher, please click on the 'Map Ordering' button on the left.

THE TOWN OF METHIL

Methil is about the sixth largest town in Fife, although it is difficult to be exact because its published population figures have, for over a hundred years, been combined with the neighbouring town of Buckhaven with which it was established as a burgh in 1891. It lies on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, immediately to the south-west of Leven and approximately eight miles north-east of Kirkcaldy.

The publisher of R P A Smith Street Plans has a special interest in Methil and its past, having been his home town for his first 18 years. For this reason, special coverage is given to the town's history - too much, in fact, to conveniently fit on one 'web page'. The information is subdivided into the categories which can be reached by clicking on the relevant items below. We hope that present and former residents of Methil find the contents of these pages to be of interest.

R P A Smith's range of Street Plans extends to nearly 100 separate map titles. To see the full list, please click on the 'Map List' button above.
